John S. "Jack" Igers

1938 – 2026

John S. "Jack" Igers

John S. "Jack" Igers, 87, passed away peacefully on April 9th, 2026, at Aspirus Wausau Hospice House.

Jack was born in 1938 in Melrose, Minnesota, the third of four children to John and Florence Igers. He attended St. Boniface Elementary School in Melrose before continuing his education at Crosier High School in Onamia, MN, graduating in 1956.

In 1965, Jack was ordained as a Catholic priest with the Crosier Fathers and Brothers. While serving at the North Dakota State Hospital in Jamestown, North Dakota, he met Irene Jaeger. The two were united in marriage in 1971 at St. Anne's Church in Kimball, Minnesota. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Iowa City, Iowa, where Jack attended the University of Iowa and earned his Master's degree in Social Work in 1973.

Later that year, Jack and Irene made their home in Wausau, Wisconsin. Jack devoted 28 years of service to North Central Health Care Center, where he worked compassionately with those in need until his retirement in 2001.

He is survived by his son, Brad Igers (Megan James) of Lynnwood, Washington, and his cherished granddaughter, Harper.

Jack was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Irene; his son, Shawn Igers; and his sisters, Jane Igers, Barb Igers, and Mary Arndt.

Jack will be remembered as a kind, caring, and charitable man who touched many lives. He found great joy outdoors, especially during his annual pheasant hunting trips to North and South Dakota. An avid basketball player known for his tenacious rebounding skills, he regularly attended morning pick-up games at the YMCA where he played until late into his 70s. Jack was well known and loved in his neighborhood, often stopping to visit with friends and neighbors on his daily walks and bike rides with his revered dogs.

He gave generously of his time as a hospice volunteer for over 20 years, offering comfort, companionship, and meaningful conversation to those nearing the end of life. Jack had a warm presence and a wonderful sense of humor that will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Services will be held at St. Anne Catholic Church on Friday, May 29, 2026. Visitation will start at 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow to Maple Grove Cemetery in the township of Maine.

Arrangements by John J. Buettgen Funeral Home.
