Rhonda Schmid, age 71, of Athens, formerly of Green Bay, was called home by her Lord on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at The Athenian, Athens, WI.
The former Rhonda Jean Retzlaff was born on September 28, 1954, in Tigerton, WI to Eugene and Leona (Steinke) Retzlaff. She graduated from Tigerton High School in 1972. Rhonda retired from Georgia-Pacific (previously Fort Howard) after over 30 years. She loved being around kids and driving school bus for many years as well.
Rhonda was incredibly passionate about her faith, church, and community. She loved giving back in any way she could. She helped with church activities such as LWML, VBS and the annual Christmas Cookie walk (no one really knows how many cookies she has made). Throughout her life she enjoyed painting, reading, sewing, crafting, ceramics, stained glass making, and cheering on the Packers, Badgers and Brewers. When she wasn't busy working or crafting, she enjoyed camping and traveling but especially spending time with her family.
Rhonda's desire to help others continued even when she moved into assisted living. She became the self-appointed welcomer to new residents and those that didn't partake in group activities, encouraging others to join in. She has taught new crafting skills, played Dominos and board games, called bingo and helped assemble countless puzzles. Her artistic creativity and passion for gardening were truly amazing. She would take any opportunity she could to make someone's day brighter and that will never be forgotten.
Rhonda is survived by her children Stacy (Steve) VanDerLinden, Athens, WI, and Nancy (Allen Boucher) Schmid, Luxemburg, WI. Brother, Jim Retzlaff, Tigerton, WI. Grandchildren, Alanah (Wade), Seth, Haley (significant other, David), Karra (Fiancé, Nicholas), Olivia (Fiancé, Lane), and Jacob. Great grandchildren, Atlas, Eleanor, Maddox, and Amara. And her beloved little dog Izzy.
She is preceded in death by parents Leona and Eugene Retzlaff; sister, Sheri Retzlaff; daughter, Shanda Daehnert; and long-time boyfriend, Tony Maciulis.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, February 28th at 11:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 Elm Street, Athens. Rev. Mark Schwarz will officiate. Friends may call on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until time of service at the church.
