In Memoriam

Mary Sue Paul

1956 – 2026

Mary Sue Paul

Mary Sue Paul, age 70, of Wausau, Wisconsin passed away peacefully on April 1, 2026, after her courageous battle with lung cancer. She was surrounded by family and snuggled in by Peanut, her canine companion of 13 years.

Mary was born in Marshfield, Wisconsin to Richard and Shirley Paul. Following family moves to Hinsdale, Illinois and Lansing, Michigan, the family settled in Wausau, and she graduated from Wausau East High School in 1974.

Her life and career were in Wausau where she served as a home health personal care assistant to people with disabilities, injuries and age-related challenges. With her big heart, Mary loved to care for and provide comfort to her clients, young and old. With professionalism, empathy, and optimism, she personified caregiving and inspired many people.

Mary was predeceased by her mother Shirley Gies Paul, her father Richard Paul and stepmother Joan Banals. Mary is survived by her stepmother Kathleen Paul of Albert Lea MN, sister Barbara Paul (Tom) of Pebble Beach CA, brothers Mike Paul (Cathy) of Edgerton WI, and William Paul of Seaside CA, stepbrothers Jeff Naden (Becky) of Pflugerville TX and David Naden (Linda) of Hillsborough NC, uncle Jim and aunt Yvonne Gies of Stevens Point WI, aunt Betty Gies of Watertown, WI, aunt Audrey Paul of KY, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Mary loved her friends and gave them her unwavering support – something that they will always remember. She treasured her constant companion, Peanut, and he was devoted to her. When Mary was the recipient of kindness and caring, she sent it back out into the world ten-fold. When life brought challenge, she still shared her love. This is her legacy.

Mary's family is grateful to so many people. We loved seeing her with her dedicated friends, who especially supported her through this cancer journey. We thank her many healthcare providers, including Dr. Niaz Haque and the team at Aspirus Cancer Center. Aspirus Hospice, especially the loving gentle care at Aspirus Hospice House in Wausau, was magnificent. It was beautiful to see how their dedicated and tender care helped release a lightness and happiness in Mary in her final weeks. And to Peanut's new "forever family," we send our deep appreciation and love.

At Mary's request, there will be no services, and her ashes will be interred near family in Albert Lea, MN. In lieu of flowers, please donate in her memory to the Aspirus Hospice House or the Marty Bus (Community Outreach Task Force) – and use this moment to give a big hug to the health care providers and caregivers who play a crucial role in the lives of people in need.

Arrangements by Mid Wisconsin Cremation Society.
